Perennial (ours). Inflorescence of several racemes on an elongated axis; racemes bearing inclined spikelets on a flat rhachis. Spikelets 1-flowered, sessile, dorsally flattened, alternate in 2 rows, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes unequal, dorsally rounded, membranous, the lower 0-1-nerved; upper deciduous, 1-nerved, longer than the lower, equalling and embracing the floret. Lemma nearly as long as the upper glume,dorsally rounded, acute or emarginate at the apex, awned. Worldwide: 4 species with a disjunct distribution: 2 in tropical Africa; 2 in the New World. Caprivi: 1 taxon. |
