Description of the genus

Annuals or stoloniferous perennials. Inflorescence a horizontal whorl of racemes; raceme terminating in a naked point. Spikelets several-flowered, laterally flattened. Glumes 1-nerved, subequal, shorter than the lemmas; lower acute; upper awned from just below the apex. Lemma: nerves and flanks glabrous; apex entire. Paleas falling with the lemmas.

Worldwide: 10 species in warm regions, mainly in the Old World

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
