Description:
Perennial herb up to c. 43 cm tall growing from a woody rootstock; stems annual, 1 to several, branched, leafy, white woolly or pubescent at first becoming glabrescent; lower leaves with petioles c. 6 mm long while other leaves subsessile; leaf blades 1.5-8 x 0.5 -2.5 cm, narrowly oblong-elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, apex acute to rounded, base cuneate, margins strongly serrate to subentire; capitula many, large and laxly arranged, terminal and solitary or 2-4 corymbiformly cymose on long stalks 3-10 cm long; involucres 12-15 x 12-18 mm, broadly turbinate-campanulate; phyllaries many seriate, progressively longer towards the inside, greenish to straw-coloured with dark green or purplish tips; corollas cornflower blue or mauve, up to 18 mm long, narrowly tubular and gradually widening to a deeply lobed limb; achenes purplish-brown at maturity, 6-8 mm long, narrowly subcylindrical to subfusiform, c. 10-ribbed; outer pappus of irregular narrow scale-like setae 1-3 mm long; inner pappus of brown, purplish tinged, flattened subplumose setae 8-11 mm long.

Derivation of specific name: rosenii: after Eric von Rosen, part of the Swedish Rhodesia-Congo Expedition, 1911-1912 when the type specimen was collected
