Description:
Slender climber with tendrils; stems up to 3 m long, hairless or sparsely setulose at the nodes. Leaves ovate or broadly ovate in outline, 1·3–8 cm long, rather shallowly to moderately deeply palmately 3–5-lobed, cordate at the base, dark green and rather coarsely scabrid-punctate above, smooth and hairless beneath e for a few setulae on veins; margin obscurely and remotely sinuate-denticulate; petiole 0·7–6 cm long, hairless or sparsely spiculate,. Flowers unisexual on the same plant. Male flowers in 2–15-flowered axillary clusters, on a peduncle peduncle 0·2–2 cm long, white, becoming yellow-green with age. Female flowers solitary, co-axillary with male. Fruit globose, 5–7 mm in diameter, hairless, smooth, red when ripe.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: marlothii: named after H.W.R. Marloth (1855-1931) South African pharmacist and botanist.
Habitat: In deciduous woodland usually on sandy soils.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
