Description:
Erect or procumbent perennial herb, up to 80 cm, growing from a thick rootstock. Leaves subsessile, linear-lanceolate, up to c. 10 cm long with longish stiff hairs above and on the veins below, often with small orange glands on the undersurface; margin entire. Flowers in elongating inflorescences, eventually up to 25(-30) cm long, greenish or cream with long caudate-acuminate lobes. Fruits almost round, up to 2.5 mm in diameter, hairless, usually brown.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: zeylanicum: from Sri Lanka (Ceylon)
Habitat: In sandy soils on riverbanks, edges of lakes and dry open woodland.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa, Arabia, Pakistan and India.
