Description: |
Shrub or small tree. Leaves spirally arranged, ovate, elliptic to obovate, up to 12 cm long, glossy green above, paler below, venation prominent, yellowish, with or without hairs; margin finely dentate. Flowers in terminal heads, yellowish-green, c. 5 mm in diameter. Fruit ovoid, 1-2 cm long, bright red when ripe. |

Derivation of specific name: | aethiopicum: of Ethiopia, a historic name for large parts of Africa schlechteri: named after Friedrich Schlechter (1872-1925), German botanist and traveller. |
Habitat: | In a wide variety of habitats, evergreen forest margins, miombo and dry deciduous woodland, riverine fringes, or rocky hillsides, often on termite mounds. |

Worldwide distribution: | From Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape, South Africa; West to Namibia and Angola. Also in Guinee, Cameroun, Madagascar, Seychelles and Comoros. |
