Description: |
Climbing perennial herb with stinging hairs. Stems twining or erect when young, up to 3 m long, growing from a woody rootstock, more or less densely hairy. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, up to c. 14 cm long, widely cordate at the 5-7-veined base, usually 2 rounded lobes, sparsely hairy to almost hairless on both surfaces, bristly on the midrib and veins below; margin dentate. Inflorescences terminal or leaf-opposed, up to 14 cm long on a peduncle up to 10 cm long. Flowers unisexual on the same inflorescence. Calyx of the female flowers densely covered in stiff hairs, consisting of 6 linear lobes; each lobe palmately divided into 9-13 linear lobes again (image 6). Fruit 3-lobed, c. 5 × 9 mm, smooth, yellow-green with rough hairs on the ribs of the lobes. |
