Description:
Perennial climber, 2-3 m. Leaves 3-5-veined from the base, variable in shape, older leaves often distinctly 3-5-lobed, younger leaves oblong-ovate to somewhat obovate, covered in yellowish velvety hairs, apex with a small sharp mucro. Flowers in axillary clusters, unisexual; sepals densely hairy. Fruit somewhat ellipsoid, c. 4 mm in diameter, fleshy, purple-blue when ripe.

Derivation of specific name: hirsutus: covered with long, moderately stiff and not interwoven hairs; hirsute
Habitat: In dry deciduous woodland.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: From Sudan and Eritrea, south to Angola, Namibia and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Also in Asia from the Arabian Peninsula to southern China.
