Description:
Terrestrial herb, mostly up to 70 cm. Leaves only just starting to develop at flowering time. Inflorescence laxly up to 12-flowered. Petals and sepals varying from very pale pink to deep purple-pink. Petals erect; sepals reflexed. Lip 3-lobed; side lobes spreading, greenish-brown with darker veins; mid-lobe deep purple-pink, white towards the throat, reflexed on the sides. Column purple, up to 10 mm long, very conspicuous. Spur 6 mm, conical, obtuse, more or less covered by the reflexed sepals. The flowers may vary considerably in colour and size but the distinct shape makes them easily recognisable.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: livingstoneana: named after the legendary Scottish explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873).
Habitat: In a variety of woodland and grassland habitats, often on sandy soils.
