Description:
Hairless perennial herb up to c. 110 cm high, growing from a small woody rhizome. Leaves numerous, basal, grass-like, more or less erect, up to 60 cm long, blue-green. Inflorescences 1-5, more or less erect, laxly branching, wiry;main peduncle stout, up to 50 cm long. Bracts ovate, 2-4 mm long, membranous, white with a brown keel. Flowers numerous, spaced on the terminal branches;pedicels mostly 8-35 mm long, recurved in flower, ascending in fruit. Perianth segments 6-10 mm long,cream-coloured or yellowish with a darker keel. Stamens yellowish densely covered in papillae in the upper half. Capsule ovoid to subglobose.4-7 mm long, smooth, often sparsely yellow-flecked.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: arvensis: of cultivated fields, the reference is not clear.
Habitat: In moist open grassland, on floodplains, grassy vleis and riverbanks, usually on sandy soils.

Worldwide distribution: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana Namibia and Angola.
