Description:
Loosely caespitose annual; culms up to 85(110) cm high, erect branched. Leaf sheaths much shorter than the internodes, glabrous; laminas 4–17 cm × 1–4 mm, tapering to a fine point at the apex. Racemes 2–7 cm long, ± stout, cylindrical, subsessile, usually enclosed by the broad spatheole for most of their length; peduncles shorter than the racemes; internodes and pedicels broad and canaliculate; spikelet base, internode, pedicel and inferior glume often with hairs up to 2.5 mm long. Sessile spikelet 4.7–7 mm long, 1/4 as long again as the pedicel, narrowly lanceolate, laterally compressed, very pointed at the base; inferior glume strongly convex, the margins strongly inrolled; superior lemma bifid almost to the base; awn 9–20 mm long, geniculate; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long. Pedicelled spikelet reduced to an awned vestigial glume 0.8–2.4 mm long; awn 3.5–6 mm long.
