Description:
Compactly tufted perennial. Culms 20–90 cm. high, slender, the basal sheaths silky villous. Leaf laminae 1–3(6) mm. wide, flat. Panicle up to 20 cm. long, narrowly lanceolate, nodding, bearing 1–6(8) triads of spikelets with connate pedicels. Spikelets 18–33 mm. long, yellowish with the inferior glume purple-brown, glabrous or very rarely tuberculate-ciliate. Inferior glume 1/2–3/4 length of spikelet. Superior lemma pubescent, the lobes tapering into bristles 10–20 mm. long, these deciduous with the central awn which is 3–9 cm. long.
