Description:
Perennial grass, growing from a shortly creeping rhizome, up to 1.5 m, usually spongy at the base with cross-nerves in the papery sheaths. Leaf laminae 2–10 mm. wide, flat or folded, strongly ribbed, papillose or not. Dense, cylindric panicle up to 30 cm, typically deep purple in colour. Spikelets 1.7–2.5 mm. long, ovate, mostly glabrous.

Habitat: A handsome species, colonizing marshy areas, seepage zones and vlei margins.
