| Description: |
Perennial, up to 1.5 m. high, fairly robust, caespitose. Culms erect, glaucous, glabrous, 3-6-noded; nodes glabrous. Leaf-sheaths tight, ciliolate along the margins. Ligule obsolete, minutely ciliate; auricles and the collar glabrous or barbate. Leaf-laminae up to 35 x 0.1-0.2 cm., linear, convolute towards the apex, scabrous above, glabrous and prominently ribbed beneath. Panicle up to 40 x 5 cm., dense, more or less contracted, much branched, with a terete or subangular axis; branches 5-11 cm. long, solitary, erect or nearly appressed, branchlets appressed, scabrous. Spikelets congested, very shortly pedicelled, pallid. Glumes slightly unequal, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, awned; the inferior 6-7 mm. long, 3-nerved, scaberulous in the upper part, scabrous on the nerves and on the keel, abruptly narrowed into a scabrous awn c. 1.5-2 mm. long; the superior c. 10 mm. long, with a smooth keel, distinctly 2-dentate at the apex with an awn, c. 2 mm. long, from the sinus. Lemma 6-7 mm. long, finely punctulate, scaberulous towards the apex; callus c. 1-1.5 mm. long, obtuse or subobtuse, long-barbate; column very short, c. 1.5 mm. long, slightly twisted; awns subequal, 10-20 mm. long; articulation between apex of the column of the lemma and the base of the awns. |
