Notes: Tall, tufted perennial grass, up to 1 m high when in flower with slender, creeping rhizome. Culms erect but basal nodes tend to be slightly geniculate, sturdy, terete, exposed internodes, green with nodes dark brown-banded, striate with dense, long, white, straight, bulbous-based indumentum (verrucose due to persistent hair bases). Leaf blade linear to narrowly lanceolate, tapering gradually to bluntish tip, 15-25(-30) cm long, 4-6 mm wide, expanded, margins somewhat involute, bright green with soft downy adpressed indumentum and also indumentum type as found on culm on both surfaces, base conspicuously auriculate with brown collar region. Ligule an inconspicuous membranous arc bearing a fringe of short white hairs, more prominent on collar. Leaf sheath clasping basally but open near nodes, not overlapping, dull green with slight tinting basally, conspicuously pubescent with same hair types as previous described, deeply canaliculate. Inflorescence an open panicle, rotund-ovate in outline, about 23 x 18 cm, borne on long, slender peduncle, spathe lacking. Main axis rigid and sturdy but terminally delicate and sinuous. Secondary axis ascending, alternately arranged, occasionally whorled, up to 20 cm long. Racemes 25 cm long. Spikelets paired (1 often reduced), minutely ellipsoid, about 2 x 1-1.5 mm. Glumes membranous, glabrous, awnless, 7 - veined, pale green. Caryopsis ellipsoid but adaxially flattened, apex acute, smooth shiny, dark brown, 1 mm long. |
