Graminoid; Notes: short, densely-tufted, perennial grass, up to 80 cm high when in flower. Culm erect but basally usually geniculate, terete, slender, green to straw-coloured but becoming conspicuously purple-tinted when exposed, glabrous, nodes deep purple-banded but glabrous, branched. Leaf blade tightly folded, 70 - 120 mm long, gradually tapering to acute apex, 3 - 4 mm broad, acutely arranged but can recurve slightly at apex, hard and scabrous to the touch, bright-green to blue-green, margin thickened, minutely setulose, can also have basally scattered, long, white, sericeous hairs, base undifferentiated to very slightly notched. Ligule an arc shaped ridge bearing a fringe of short, white, densely packed hairs with long, white sericeous hairs conspicuous on collar. Leaf sheath loosely circumculmate, often open to base, blue-green with hyaline margins, 70 mm long, canaliculate, glabrous, persistent. Inflorescence with racemes digitately clustered, cuneate in outline. Raceme 2.5 - 6 cm long, 3 mm wide. Spikelets arranged alternately along axis, narrowly ellipsoid, 2. 5 x 0.5 mm, masked by conspicuous awns. Glumes membranous, purple-brown with dense, long, white, sericeous indumentum. |
