Graminoid; Notes: Tall, tufted, perennial grass, up to 1,5 m high when in flower. Culms ascending but relatively geniculate at base, rooting from nodes of procumbent culms, sturdy terete, greenish to straw-coloured to purple-tinted, smooth, glabrous, arising from creeping, woody rhizome. Leaf blades linear, tapering gradually to needle-like tip, 10 - 40 cm long, folded out commonly tightly involuted never expanded, blue-green, hard in texture, ascending, rigid, about glabrous, base notched. Ligule a membranous, narrow are fringed with dense, cream-coloured hairs, about 1,5 mm long, extending onto collar region. Leaf sheath tightly circumculmate, yellow-green to distinctly purple at base, up to 10 cm long, canaliculate, glabrous, persistent. Inflorescence an open panicle, 30 - 40 cm long, borne on long slender peduncle. Raceme arranged basally at 6 - 10 cm intervals, more congested terminally, up to 180 mm long, slender, drooping.
