Graminoid; Notes: Tall, erectly tufted, perennial grass, up to 1.25 m when in flower. Culm erect to slightly geniculate at base, terete, sturdy and reed-like, green-yellow maturing to straw-coloured, striate but glabrous, nodes purple-banded with a ring of long, white, straight silky hairs. Leaf blade tightly rolled and needle-like tapering to a sharp apex, dull grey-green with scattered, long white hairs, base somewhat auriculate but not pronounced so. Ligule membranous, orange-brown, well-exerted, 3-lobed with long purplish hairs extending onto collar. Leaf sheath open and only slightly imbricate basally, yellow-green with dense long white straight indumentum (hairs with bulbous podia). Inflorescence 1(-2) - spicate racemes, up to 30 cm long (1 raceme shorter than the other), closely arranged, erect, sheath lacking. Spikelet paired; upper spikelet with awn: pale yellow, sinuate with dense white indumentum; lower spikelet awnless. Glumes green, membranous, densely pubescent. Pedicel with basal cluster of dense white bristles. Anthers 4 mm long bearing bright golden yellow pollen. |
