professor at the University of Lubumbashi in Élisabethville (1956-1972), professor at the Institut préuniversitaire officiel d’Usumbura in Bujumbura, professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. J.-J. Symoens devoted most of his career to African flora. He also contributed to the preparation of the Order royal dated 16.2.1976 on the protection of native plants in Belgium. His collections of bryophytes and vascular plants are kept in BR and BRLU.
