Description

Hillwood is one of the few large scale commercial farms in northern Mwinilunga District and a thriving community has grown around it. It was founded and is still run by members of the Fisher family who first arrived in the area as missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century (Fisher 1991). In addition to the livestock and arable fanning, a game ranch has been established called Nchila Wildlife Reserve. The farm is bisected by the Sakeji River and over much of the area the vegetation remains relatively undisturbed. The three dominant habitats are grassy plains, woodland and forest. The grasslands range from very wet, peaty dambos to drier, sandy areas typical ofthe region's watersheds. In many areas the miombo woodland forms a mosaic with patches of dry evergreen forest and along the drainage lines are strips of wet, evergreen gallery forest. In a few places these broaden to form large mushitus, the local name for which is 'lito'.
