Description of the genus

Unarmed trees, shrubs, subshrubs or herbs. Leaves paripinnate, often with spherical to clavate or cylindric glands on petiole and/or rhachis. Flowers in racemes; pedicels without bracteoles. Sepals 5. Petals 5, yellow. Stamens usually 10; filaments straight, shorter than or not over twice as long as the basifixed anthers. Pods (in ours) shorter than in Cassia, i.e. less than 30 cm, terete or flattened, indehiscent or tardily dehiscent, valves not twisting.

Worldwide: c.240 species, pantropical, most numerous in the New World
