Description of the genus

Acaulescent herbs with an asymmetrical corm. Leaves 2-many, distichous, canaliculate with a broad sheathing base. Flowers 1-many in a terminal capitulum surrounded by, often large, green or colourful petaloid bracts. Perianth segments 6, free, ovate-acuminate. Ovary 3-locular, deeply 3-sulcate. Capsule 3-sulcate. Seeds spherical or angled , minutely verrucose.

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical and subtropical Africa, including the Mediterranean littoral, the Canary Is and the Middle East

Caprivi: 1 taxon.
