Description of the genus

Robust leafy perennials with thick rhizomes and (in ours) stolons. Stems hollow except at nodes. Inflorescence a long panicle, sometimes ± corymbose. Spikelets of 4-11 spirally-arranged glumes; 3-5 lowest glumes sterile. Perianth segments 0. Stigmas 3. Nutlet small.

Worldwide: 3 species; one cosmopolitan apart from North America
