Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of irregular racemes, these digitate or in whorls on a short common axis; racemes sometimes bare at base bearing the spikelets in pairs or in clusters. Spikelets ovate to elliptic; glumes acute to shortly awned; lower c. 1/2 as long, upper as long as the spikelet with ciliate margin; upper lemma awned, crisply chartaceous; margin involute.

Worldwide: 6 species in the Old World tropics
