Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Spikelets 4-6(-9)-flowered; glumes subequal, persistent, 9-11-nerved; lemma dorsally long-villous towards the base, usually scabrid, 6-lobed to nearly the middle with 5 scabrid awns between the membranous lobes; callus bearded.

Worldwide: 2 species occurring in Africa, Cape Verde Is and Pakistan
