Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, lanceolate, linear-lanceolate or oblanceolate. Capitula heterogamous, in small clusters which are arranged in cymes or corymbs. Phyllaries in 3-4 series. Outer florets female in 2-many series, numerous, usually outnumbering the inner bisexual florets. Pappus of many scabrid bristles Worldwide: c. 80 species, mostly in Central and South America, with a few in the warm Old World Caprivi: 2 taxa. |
