Prostrate dioecious perennial herbs (in ours) with annual stems arising from tubers. Leaves simple. Tendrils consisting of weak spines. Flowers yellow. Male flowers solitary or in fascicles; petals 5; stamens 3. Female flowers solitary; ovary spiny. Fruit ellipsoid to subspherical, indehiscent, bearing many stout conical spines. Worldwide: 2 species in southern Africa Caprivi: 1 taxon. |
