Description of the genus

Climbing, or rarely prostrate, monoecious herbs. Leaves simple. Tendrils simple. Flowers yellowish. Male flowers in subsessile to pedunculate congested axillary clusters; corolla lobes small, (0.7 - 2 mm long), shortly united below; stamens 5. Female flowers solitary or clustered, axillary; ovary smooth, developing a cup-shaped base; perianth as in male flowers; stigma 2(-3)-lobed. Fruits small, red, often beaked, circumscissile near the persistent base.

Worldwide: 13 species in tropical Africa, Madagascar and India

Caprivi: 3 taxa.
