Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stipules with 1-several fimbriae. Leaves opposite. Flowers bisexual, heterostylous or isostylous, in terminal or axillary inflorescences, sometimes fasciculate or solitary at nodes. Calyx lobes 4 (in ours). Corolla lobes 4. Ovary 2-locular. Capsule subspherical to oblong, usually with a beak.

Derivation of name: after Hendrik Bernhard Oldenland, c. 1663-1699, German-born South African botanist.

Worldwide: 300 species in the tropics, especially in Africa.

Caprivi: 1 taxon.
