Description of the genus

Small annuals. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle. Spikelets 2-flowered, (both florets bisexual), laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes subequal and similar, persistent, usually hyaline, awnless, enclosing the florets except for the awns. Lemmas shorter than the glumes, dorsally rounded, 5-nerved, geniculately dorsally awned from below the middle; apex acute to acuminate, usually 2-dentate.

Worldwide: 8 species in Europe, and the Mediterranean to Iran.
