Description of the genus

Low, spiny, much-branched suffrutex forming dense patches. Stems and branches with reflexed spines. Leaves simple, entire. Flowers solitary on axillary pedunclesin leaf axils; peduncles becoming spiny and persisting after the fall of the fruit. Calyx actinomorphic, 5-lobed, somewhat accrescent. Corolla large (10-13 mm long), red; tube ± cylindric; limb 2-lipped; upper lip 2-lobed; lower lip 3-lobed nearly to base, reflexed. Stamens didynamous, long-exserted. Fruit a drupe with 3 pyrenes.

Worldwide: 1 species in tropical Africa
