Herbs or shrubs, usually growing in wet places. Stipules reduced or 0. Leaves alternate or opposite, mostly entire. Bracteoles conspicuous or 0, usually 2 at or near the base of the ovary. Hypanthium 0. Sepals 3-7, persistent in fruit. Petals yellow or 0. Fruit a capsule, dehiscing irregularly. Seeds without hairs.

Worldwide: 82 species, cosmopolitan, but mostly America
