Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, sometimes leafless; latex usually white. Leaves simple, opposite. Corolla fused basally. Gynostegial corona in one or two whorls. Follicles generally single. Seeds flattened, sometimes winged, with a tuft of white hairs.
